Mephisto Workshop 2017 held at Yunnan University
On December 9th to 10th, 2017, the first Multi-channel Photometric Survey Telescope (Mephisto) workshop, organized by the South-Western Institute for Astronomy Research (SWIFAR), was held at Yunnan University. In total, 66 colleagues from 19 institutes participated the workshop. Dr. Li Zhang, the vice president of Yunnan University, Dr. Xiaowei Liu, the founding director of SWIFAR, and Dr. Guoxuan Dong, the associate director of Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), gave opening remarks.
Being a key project led by SWIFAR, Mephisto is planned to have a 1.6m primary mirror and a 3.14 deg2 field of view. Through innovative designs, it will be expected to be the first in the world that can realize wide-field observations simultaneously with 3 optical bands, resulting colored documentary of the sky.
During the workshop, participants discussed enthusiastically the potentials of using unique Mephisto data in a wide range of studies, from Solar system to cosmic structures. Suggestions on potential observing sites, camera design, and data management techniques were also presented. The workshop is an excellent starting point for the Mephisto project, which is well received by the community. With the support from Yunnan University and also from the community, we are working hard to push the project forward.
